1. Jaula

It is a dish prepared out of curd milk and is generally served with rice as a replacement for dal.  It has different variants found all over Uttarakhand. It is basically a curry made by curd milk and spices.
It is delicious with a sour taste (not too sour, can hardly be sensed).
Many a times it is prepared by adding cucumber/guard/radish badi to which makes it much tastier. If you ever visit Uttarakhand you must try this dish.

2.  Kandali vegetable or bichu ghass saag

Have you ever heard of nettle plant? Yes, I am talking of the same nettle plant which has formic acid in its leaves, and on touching the skin it gives rashes with a burning sensation.
Well it might sound insane but in Uttarakhand people make vegetable out of that plant and it is famous with the same name as mentioned above. It is too tasty for you to deny having it for dinner.




Also being a green leafy vegetable it is nutrient rich. Don't forget to ask for it next time you visit Uttarkhand.

3. Bhatt ka dubuk

Bhatt is a local pulse rich in iron.  And bhatt ka jaula is a dish made out of it which is semi-solid. Though mutually it doesn't have any taste as no spices are mixed while preparing it but when served with rice and dal it makes you feel that you are on an heavenly dine (That's true, for otherwise why would it be so famous among all people of Uttarakhand. It is generally prepared in the winter season because of the cycle it is grown in, its crop gives the yield just before winters.

 Moreover it has health benefits too; it has many other nutrients with iron and also helps to be safe from the cold effects in the Himalayan State.






4. Kumaouni Raita

Made out from the locally grown cucumber (kakdi - bigger in size than the normal cucumber).
It is a mixture of a curd spices and pectin as well as fibers of the cucumber. Rich in vitamin C this dish is too spicy if prepared with the radu(a local spice). It doesn't give a burning hot sensation like chilly but once you take it in it, brings tears, makes your head go boom. And its taste is just a bizarre.

5. Aloo Ke Gutke


How is it possible that the pretty potato is missing as a dish? It isn't. Now when you hear of aloo ke gutke it is an Uttarkhandi dish that is made out of boiled potatoes fried with spices and then at last coriander leaves are the exciting sights of this dish. When you eat you would just ask your life that why didn't it bring this dish to you until now?

6. Pua


Pua is a sweet cuisine made out of floor paste with jaggery. It is generally prepared on some special occasions like festivals and when guests arrive. But if you want to taste it you can get it made whenever you need because Athithi Devo Bhava.

7. Badi
Badi is a salty dish made out of dal paste. It is a fried dish and is so tasty that you would hardly spare any of your friends eating your share; After all it is nutritious and tasty combination. ;)

8. Singauri And Bal Mithai 
Singauri is a sweet made out of khoa and is wrapped in a cone shape in maalu leaf. It van be termed as a dairy product though nowadays besan is added to it but it hasn't lost its taste. Visit Almora if you want the best taste.








The famous Bal mithai of Almora together with other sweets is so tasty that the city of Almora is known as Bal Mithai Ka Shahar (The City of the Bal Mithai). It is gifted to others on special occasions as well as on a meeting after a long time. It can be found almost everywhere in Uttarakhand, but if you want to visit some place that has a glorious history as well as a scenic view of the peaks of The Great Himalaya then Almora is the best one to visit.




9. Bhaang Ki Chutney
Surprised if it existed? Yes, it does exist and has been serving people of Uttarkhand for years with its taste. It is aromatic and is obviously non-narcotic but will surely make you addicted for it because of the great taste.
